I'm sorry, I don't have any interest in Linux personally. I hear that people have been successfully using UF with WINE on Linux though, maybe that works for you?

Alright that's fair! I'll look into using WINE if I do make the transition. Cheers!

For me it runs fine* on Wine. DPI scaling doesn't work and all text so inputs are tiny. Working in the build-in formula editor is slow/sluggish so I'm using an external editor (IntelliJ), which has better edit capabilities anyway, configured with custom syntax highlighting. Too bad you can't configure an external editor, as I have to navigate the path to open/edit formulas.

So what about a ... server port? So this could be run on like a docker instance on a PAAS provider?

That's a much smaller load? I'll help if I can?

I still think that would be a huge amount of work that only is useful for a really small percentage of UF users, sorry...

I have been running UF on Linux using both, pure wine and Valve's Proton, and it works fine. There are some quirks I have noticed, none of which are dealbreakers for me:

  • sometimes closing one window sends the entire stack of UF windows into the background and I have to alt-tab again to get it back in focus
  • sometimes the some or most of the previews of formula/colorings/parameters in a file are stacked in the browser in the top left (first) spot, but clicking on list view and then back to preview view fixes this and makes them all visible

Other than that, it works fine. I haven't tested the server, but I see no reason why it should not work, without all the Gui stuff it should be even simpler. I also haven't done any speed comparisons, but I could do it when I get around to it. DPI scaling is something I don't need but even in native Linux applications it can be somewhat sketchy from what I noticed. Notice that the UF setup can also be run using wine, so installation is not a problem either.

However, I have not been able to use my license to activate it on my laptop using wine, but it worked on my PC using steam + proton. I might be doing something wrong though and I will have to check again.

Also, wasn't there a threading issue with the server, i.e. it being single threaded so we would have to run as many instances of it and connections as we have threads?

Thanks for the feedback regarding Wine/Linux. These are more or less the kind of issues I would expect.

The UF server indeed has the limitation of allowing only one thread per connection. However, you can make multiple connections to the same server to work around this.

Ah, so it's just multiple connections, not multiple launches. That is good to know. smile

I just noticed (after 2 years!) that Wine is crap!!!!

I switched from Linux Mint's provided Wine to Proton's "soda-experimental_8.0" (note: this is newer than soda_9.0-1, which, btw, I haven't tested), and the benchmark went from over 30 minutes to just under 7 minutes.

We could open a Linux thread with installation and troubleshooting instructions, as well as a list of known issues and how to get around them. What do you think?

Would be nice to see more people dump Windows as it has become a complete privacy nightmare for average end users. Personally, I am done with it. I only keep the installation around for work and as a last option if I really need something that won't run. Otherwise there is really no reason for it.

I do offer a Mac version so there is an alternative. smile But I can understand using a Mac is not for everyone.

That's minutes, not seconds. :-)

Whoops

I'm just as against Mac as against Windows. Mac is overpriced, irrationally locked down, dictatorial, and making apps is pricey (never free).
